Second Chances (pt. 4)

Jason knew every burger place in every city he went to. He waited for Hannah while she grabbed her wallet and phone and changed her shoes. It took her less than five minutes.

“So you’ve been here before?” Hannah asked.

He nodded. “I have a route, I guess you’d say. Same few hospitals.”

“What do you sell?”

“Medical equipment.”

“That’s vague.”

“I can explain why we make the best robotic arms for hip replacement, but do you really want to hear that?”

She laughed. The sound made his stomach do a flip-flop.

“Ok. Nevermind.”

“What about you? Have you been here before?”

She shook her head. “We’re opening a new office. I’m here to help.”

“Right here,” he told her, pulling open a door.

Inside it was dim. The smell of fire-grilled meat lingered.

“Oh, wow! It smells yummy!”

He grinned. He didn’t think anyone used the word yummy. Hannah did, apparently.

They followed the host to their table.

“So, you grew up in Atlanta?” Jason couldn’t help but wonder if he’d ever seen her before she moved.

She nodded. “When did you graduate?”

“2022. What about you?”

“23. You said you went to GSU, right?”

He nodded. “I got a degree in Marketing. Then I discovered I didn’t want to write ads or anything like that. What about you?”

“I studied Industrial Engineering. I love numbers.”

Jason stuck his tongue out. “Ew. Math.”

“Supply chains and statistics are my thing.” She shrugged, then laughed.

“So, maybe that’s how you know me.”

Hannah’s eyes lit up.
